The Path of the Rainbow

CAMINO DEL ARCO IRIS

Rezo: Olofin Adawauye Bokun Bogbo Omode Danda Juero Orunmila Inshe Ozain, Kaferefun Orunmila.

Ebbó: Owunkó (billy goat), one long-necked guiro, 16 eweifá, obí, kola, 16 ekrú, 16 ataré, rolled cloth, red cloth, green cloth, white and black cloth, bogbó tenuyén, and opolopó owó.

When Olofin created the earth, he covered it entirely with water, and told all his children to do everything possible to make that water disappear and gather it into a single place, so that they could live on Aiyé.

All the orishas set about preparing channels to gather the waters into the low places — those channels are the rivers of today.

Dandajuero (the Boa), who was a friend of Orúnmila's, went to see him and said: "My abure, there is a terrible task that Olofin has laid upon us so that we may live on the earth, but I, without hands or feet, cannot do my part."

Orúnmila made Osoddé for him and saw this Ifá, and made him the Ebbó above, and prepared him an Inshé Ozaín, feeding it owunkó and 16 jío jío, placing the heads of all those animals inside the guiro. He then hung it around Dandajuero's neck and sent him to circle the earth, floating upon the guiro — but he could not look back.

Dandajuero set out with the second crowing of the rooster, and as he finished his journey, flying around the planet and beginning his descent, he heard a very strange sound that said: Blu, blu, blu. And he wondered: "What could this be that follows me with that sound? Could it be this guiro?" But he did not turn his head, and continued his journey around the earth.

He came down once the Inshé Ozaín had finished creating the solid land.

The other orishas, who had made the rivers, went to see Olofin exactly sixteen days later to give an account of their labor; all of them told Olofin that they had created the rivers. When Olofin asked Dandajuero what he had created, he answered: "Father, I alone, with Ifá's help, created the ocean that surrounds all the earth."

Olofin gave the other orishas women, gold, jewels, and riches; but to Dandajuero, who had created the Universal Ocean and the lands where they could live, he gave only a woman with reddish hair, misshapen, and with copper-colored skin. All the other orishas began to mock Dandajuero, for they did not know that this woman was Olofin's own daughter.

Dandajuero, upset, returned to Orúnmila's house and told him about the woman Olofin had given him, saying: "If you saw her, you would vomit." Orúnmila told him: "Olofin has given you a prize in his own daughter — do not reject her."

Orúnmila made an osoddé for him, saw this same Ifá again, and made him the same Ebbó once more — but this time adding to the Inshé Ozaín: otubón (gunpowder) and inlé akán (crab earth). This was so that she could enter into his house.

One day, Dandajuero asked his wife: "What do you see when you look at me?" She answered: "What has Orúnmila told you about me? Why do you ask me that?" Dandajuero, changing the thread of the conversation, said: "It's that Orúnmila marked me this Inshé Ozaín, and I have been left without money." She answered: "That is nothing — you will have a fortune." "What do you mean?" asked Dandajuero. She replied: "Turn around for a moment." He turned, and the woman began to whistle very loudly, and at once great winds began to blow over the earth from the north, the south, the east, and the west, and millions of living beings — humans, animals, and plants — appeared across the whole world, and Dandajuero's wife became very beautiful.

Then Dandajuero understood the great prize Olofin had given him, and he too became beautiful, and he and his wife, who was Aydajuero, became the Rainbow — from then on seen as two arcs high in the sky. The other orishas grew envious of him and wanted to destroy him by any means. Oshosi tried to kill him, but Dandajuero dazzled him with his light, and the orishas said: "Dandajuero is like Olofin himself." And Dandajuero continued his path across the heavens.

Nota: A woman will provide all the good fortune you will enjoy in your life, because she is the daughter of Olofin. Here the Universal Ocean was created, and the rivers were created. Cosmonautics was born, for Dandajuero was the first to fly over the whole planet.

The Friendship Gets Tested

LA AMISTAD
›

There were two friends who, since their youth, had gone about together. To seal their friendship, they agreed to plant a coconut palm: one brought a hoop, and the other brought the palm. As time went by, they had a falling out, each one claiming what belonged to him. The one who had set the hoop wanted it back, but to retrieve the hoop they would have had to fell the palm. Therefore, it is better to leave things as they are, as proof of our friendship.
